What’s Included in the BLS Course

aha bls book and ecard

Our BLS course teaches you the essential life-saving skills you’ll need to manage in emergency situations. Below are some of the key components of the course:

  1. High-Quality Chest Compressions
One of the cornerstones of BLS is effective chest compressions. We focus on teaching the right depth, rate, and hand placement to maximize blood flow to vital organs, especially the brain and heart. Proper compression is critical in increasing the chances of survival during a cardiac arrest.
  2. Rescue Breathing
BLS also includes learning how to provide proper rescue breathing, ensuring that oxygen is delivered to the lungs of a patient who is unable to breathe on their own. You’ll practice effective techniques to maintain an open airway and ensure the patient is properly ventilated.
  3. Use of AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
You’ll become proficient in the use of an AED, an essential tool for reviving a patient in cardiac arrest. Our training will show you how to use an AED safely and effectively, from proper pad placement to following the machine’s instructions for defibrillation.
  4. Managing Cardiac Arrest and Other Emergencies
Cardiac arrest is one of the most common situations in which BLS is used. In this course, we’ll teach you how to recognize the signs of cardiac arrest and how to respond swiftly to improve the patient’s chance of survival. Other emergency situations, such as respiratory failure or choking, are also covered.
  5. Team Dynamics and Communication
In a medical emergency, teamwork is important. This course also covers effective communication and team roles to ensure a coordinated, efficient response. You’ll learn how to work with other healthcare providers, paramedics, and first responders to manage the patient’s condition.
  6. Post-Resuscitation Care
BLS includes techniques for stabilizing patients after the emergency phase. Post-resuscitation care ensures that patients continue to receive care and that their vital signs are monitored.

Great setup & easy to figured out and use. Just an fyi - I did have a little difficulty getting into the building. Maybe just wanna put a little note that the sequence is the number # plus had a few more steps cause the door was still locked - There's no button for Enter, so I guessed & used the top button (was the name of the lock), then the numbers went blue but I still couldn't unlock it. I had to do it over, then I once went blue, put the code in again, and then it went green and allowed me to unlock it.

Thankfully, I have an electronic lock at one of my rental properties, so I was able to get through that sequence. Maybe put a troubleshoot or a note there at the end of the info page you guys have: if you're having difficulties, that's how the external lock works.
Such a convenient way to recertify for BLS and more. Was able to complete the online portion very easily and the skills test as quick and to the point once you figure out how to seal the mask to the face. Will be doing my future trainings here! Thank you!
The best experience! It was absolutely fun!
I was extremely disappointed with the setup at this Same Day CPR training center. As nurses and clinicians, our CPR skills directly impact patient survival, yet this facility relies on a computer monitor and a Ring camera setup with someone talking through a speaker to evaluate skills.

There was no actual instructor present in the room to observe form, offer real-time physical feedback, or properly assess compression depth and technique. Having a healthcare professional complete a critical AHA skill check through a video doorbell speaker is dynamic, sloppy, and completely sub-par for medical credentialing.

When I spoke to Kelly, the owner's sister, she brushed me off and said "This is what AHA wants" I let her know, pediatric lives are in HER hands.
Amazing!!! I wish I had known about this earlier. I honestly feel like I learned more from the online CPR portion and the in person skills check than I did in the fully in person BLS class I took two years ago.

The entire process was also incredibly convenient and efficient. I was able to schedule everything the same day and complete both the online portion and the in person skills check in a very reasonable amount of time, without feeling rushed.

Being able to get real time feedback on things like compression depth and rate was extremely helpful. I also really liked that there were practice modes you could use before starting the exam portion, so you actually had a chance to get comfortable and improve your technique first. Even during the exam portion, you could redo it if you weren’t happy with your score.

Overall, it was a great learning experience, and I left feeling much more confident in my CPR skills. I would definitely recommend it!
Absolutely recommend! Very easy to learn, test allow for practice before exam with the mannequin, overall very helpful and easy.
Quick, simple, and easy to follow along and correct any mistakes you might make during the test.
This was my first time taking a BLS class, and I was definitely nervous. Thankfully, the environment made me feel comfortable right away. The office was small, intimate, and very soothing. Everything was clean, well maintained, and the location felt very secure.

The course was explained in a simple, easy-to-understand way. It took me a moment to understand what the computer was asking me to do, but that was only because I was overthinking it. Once I got the hang of it, I did a great job.

The training equipment gives detailed, reassuring feedback, letting you know if you need to do fewer compressions, go faster, or if you're doing everything correctly. I found that very helpful and encouraging.

The staff was incredibly supportive via phone and email, responded quickly to any questions or concerns, and communicated everything clearly throughout the course. Overall, I had an excellent experience and would definitely recommend the BLS training at this location.

What is BLS?

BLS (Basic Life Support) is a crucial training for healthcare professionals and those in the medical field. It equips you with the skills to provide immediate care in life-threatening situations. Bayside CPR offers AHA BLS courses.

BLS stands for Basic Life Support. A BLS course completion card from the AHA indicates that a person has completed the training to recognize emergencies and perform CPR, use an AED, and manage choking.

Your American Heart Association (AHA) BLS course completion card from Bayside CPR is valid for two years.

BLS training is recommended for healthcare providers and anyone in the medical field or anyone who wants the highest level of CPR training.

Bayside CPR offers three convenient options:

    • Traditional: Attend a full in-person BLS course.
    • Blended Learning(Fast Track): Complete the online AHA HeartCode BLS, then attend a skills check-off at Bayside CPR.
    • CPR Verification Station(Most Popular): Complete the online portion (included) and skills check off at our CPR Verification station.

Our BLS classes cover CPR for all ages, AED use, and choking relief techniques.

The Basic Life Support Instructor-led Initial and Renewal classes follow a streamlined two-part learning approach. First, complete the online HeartCode BLS portion at your own pace, then visit a nearby location for the quick skills check session to earn your official AHA course completion card.

Upon successful completion of any of our BLS courses, you will receive an official AHA BLS Provider eCard. No matter which option you choose, you’ll receive the exact same AHA BLS Provider eCard, valid for two years.

AHA requires having access to the BLS Provider Manual. Books are available for purchase at our conveniently located training centers. We also provide a helpful study guide located on our resources tab on this website.

Bayside CPR does not issue CEUs or CMEs. If you need CME credits, you can claim them by clicking on “Claim CE Card.” These credits are not required for the class, they are only necessary if your governing body requires something beyond the AHA Course Completion Card.

The American Heart Association HeartCode / Online with CPR Verification Station is an innovative way to earn or renew your AHA Course Completion Card without spending hours in class. This format is available for BLS, ACLS, and PALS courses, with hands-on training completed quickly and efficiently. Appointments are offered seven days a week at most locations, and upon completion, you’ll instantly receive your official AHA eCard.

We have multiple convenient locations across Maryland and Washington D.C. to provide American Heart Association courses for BLS, CPR, ACLS, and PALS, where you’ll receive your official AHA course completion card upon successful completion.
